Western Europe in Putin’s Crosshairs: A Rebuke on Sovereignty

by admin477351

In a sharp rebuke aimed at America’s traditional allies, Russian President Vladimir Putin placed Western Europe in his rhetorical crosshairs, claiming that its nations “can easily exist without sovereignty.” He used this assertion to draw a stark contrast with Russia, for whom he claimed sovereignty is an existential issue.

This comment, made during a speech about U.S. relations, was a deliberate geopolitical statement. It seeks to portray European nations as vassals of the United States, lacking true independence, and therefore unfit to lecture Russia on its own sovereign choices.

By making this distinction, Putin is also subtly appealing to President Trump’s “America First” sensibilities and his own past criticisms of European allies. It is an attempt to find common ground with Trump by framing the world as a contest between true sovereign powers and their dependents.

This rebuke serves as a warning to Europe as well. It signals that in any potential U.S.-Russia negotiation over the continent’s security, Moscow views the major European powers as secondary players who have already forfeited their right to an independent voice.
