By accepting a comprehensive U.S.-led peace deal, Israel has signaled its readiness for a “new reality” in Gaza. A senior official’s confirmation of the government’s endorsement of the plan indicates a willingness to move beyond the pre-war status quo and establish a different future, provided Hamas is disarmed.
This new reality, as envisioned in the deal, would be one of demilitarization, reconstruction, and stable governance. It would replace the long-standing paradigm of blockade and conflict with a new model based on security for Israel and recovery for Gaza.
The acceptance of this deal is an acknowledgment that the old reality is unsustainable. The plan offers a pathway to a more hopeful future, but it requires a fundamental shift from all parties, most notably the requirement for Hamas to transition from a military to a political movement.
Israel has now officially signaled its willingness to embark on this path. This puts the ball in Hamas’s court, challenging them to also embrace a new reality and make the difficult compromises necessary to achieve a lasting peace.
