Donald Trump has described the current ceasefire agreement with Iran as being on “life support” and indicated he is contemplating a resumption of U.S. Navy military escorts for vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz. This move is aimed at countering Iran’s blockade of this crucial maritime route.
The U.S. president sharply criticized Iran’s peace proposals, dismissing them as foolish, and insisted he is not under any domestic pressure to reach an agreement. Regarding the ceasefire in place since April 7, Trump remarked, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us—I didn’t even finish reading it.” He likened the situation to a medical scenario, suggesting the ceasefire is on “massive life support,” with a bleak outlook.
Last week, the U.S. laid out a series of conditions aimed at reducing tensions, primarily focused on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, over the weekend, Iran responded with counter-proposals that Trump immediately rejected. In an attempt to give diplomacy a chance, Trump had previously halted “Project Freedom,” a plan to escort oil tankers through the Strait, after just a couple of days. This decision was partly due to resistance from Saudi Arabia, which opposed using its airspace or bases for what it viewed as an escalation.
Trump’s recent comments come in the wake of another spike in oil prices after Iran declared it would not engage in further discussions to lift the blockade unless certain conditions were met. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, stated that negotiations would not proceed unless the conflict ended on all fronts, sanctions were lifted, blocked funds were released, war damages were compensated, and Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz was recognized.
