Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking from Moscow, criticized the U.S. for intensifying pressure on Russia through sanctions rather than acting as an impartial negotiator. This criticism comes in the wake of a decision by G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to bolster measures that target Russia’s economy, focusing particularly on its energy sector.
Since assuming office in 2025, President Trump has attempted to broker negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic efforts have hit a standstill as Ukraine remains firm in its refusal to concede to Russian demands, which include territorial concessions, military limitations, and restrictions on Western support. Lavrov’s remarks underscore the deepening tensions as diplomatic channels remain blocked.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced concerns over Europe’s increased military spending and defense expansion, suggesting that European nations are preparing for conflict with Russia. Putin reaffirmed Russia’s demand for Ukraine to withdraw from the eastern Donbas region and noted that Russian forces are nearing the capture of the strategically important city of Kostiantynivka. He also accused Ukraine and its Western allies of orchestrating attacks on Russian infrastructure to destabilize the country.
