Treasury Introduces Tech-Enhanced $1 Coin Honoring Donald Trump

The United States Mint has commenced production of a new $1 commemorative coin featuring former President Donald Trump, as announced by the US Treasury Department. This initiative is part of the festivities celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Set to be released this fall, the coin’s final design was approved earlier this year, although it now features a gold-colored finish rather than being made of solid gold, diverging slightly from the original concept.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that this coin is designed to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism in America. He emphasized that it serves as a tribute to the nation’s values and steadfast commitment to freedom. The coin’s obverse side showcases a portrait of Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The coin’s reverse side features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Despite its celebratory intent, the coin has sparked controversy due to longstanding federal law that typically prevents living presidents from being depicted on US currency.

Nevertheless, Treasury officials argue that the Secretary possesses the authority to authorize certain commemorative coins under specific circumstances. This assertion aims to address the criticism surrounding the decision to feature a living former president on the new coin.
