The new regulations, introduced by the US Department of Homeland Security, impose more stringent residency requirements on F, J, and I category visas. These visas are typically held by international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. Under the updated framework, holders of these non-immigrant visas will be subject to fixed terms of stay, replacing the previous system that allowed for longer durations without consistent federal monitoring.
Significantly, the recent changes reduce the grace period available to F visa holders upon completing their studies. Previously, students had 60 days to leave the country, transfer to another educational institution, or change their immigration status; this period has now been shortened to 30 days. This adjustment may pose challenges for Indian students navigating post-study plans in the United States.
While acknowledging that immigration policies are ultimately determined by national sovereignty, Indian officials have reiterated their dedication to assisting Indian nationals.
